For my webtext, I chose to produce a 7-minute video essay advocating for anyone watching to set some time aside to play the game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and why. My audience was meant to be individuals who were looking for a new game to play, or people who have heard of the game and have thought of playing but haven’t made up their minds yet.
I believe that my webtext meets its rhetorical situation because I start the video by making very clear what it is that I will be arguing, which is that the developers of the game used contrast as a tool to create a greater sense of nostalgia, and for that reason, people who have not played the game should take the time to play it.
I break the video up into three sections wherein I discuss the use of contrast in the music, the map and the dialogue, each section broken up with a title slide to let the viewer know what to expect in that section, along with ample examples and evidence from the game play. Not only do I give examples, but I go further to analyse each piece of evidence and apply meaning to my overall argument.
The reason I chose the video essay is because video allows for greater rhetorical assets, and has a wider array of allowances as opposed to simple narrative or even a blog post. I was able to combine all elements of digital rhetoric, with the narrative, the video and even my argumentative writing for the script. I feel that I made great use of my assets to prove my point, and choosing video as my genre was the right direction to go.
